review 1: I think the author protests too much that she is not as "simple" as her family and teachers made her out to be in her youth because I think it is her "simpleness" (evident in her manner of expression) that makes this book work at all. I got the sense that it was her innocence--her simplicity--that allowed Byrne to connect with the spirits around her in the way she did/does. I have no doubt that she believes in all she sees and experiences, for I also believe in the existence of angels (though perhaps not in exactly the same way as is portrayed here), but I have a hard time with some of her descriptions, not to mention the utter blandness of her writing. Still for all its faults, there is a certain appeal to Byrne's rawness and heartfelt pleas. I probably would not have ... morefinished this book if it had not been our book club selection, but I found it interesting enough for the discussions it stimulated.
review 2: Really mixed feelings on this one. I would probably give it 2 1/2 stars, but I will come back and review it after we discuss it in book club this week. I will say that I am skeptical of the authors perceptions of her experiences. I know others who have had similar experiences, and while I believe that they have truly experienced something, I'm not sure that "truth" is what they experienced. This book touches deeply on the spiritual nature of human beings, and tries to reconcile that with the nature of God. But I have been taught to perceive God differently. To my mind, much more clearly, where this book seems to be hazy in that regard. Update: I stand by my initial assessment of this book. Though there may be some truths in it, it doesn't ring completely true with my beliefs and the simple, remedial style of writing is tedious to read. less

The lightest and loveliest book, written by a wonderful Irish lady.
