review 1: This memoir of a single, recently-fired, pre-menopausal journalist searching for herself through her work on the island of Kauai is probably not going to garner four stars from everyone who reads it, but it really resonated with me--maybe because she and I have suffered such similar slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. It reads a lot like Eat Pray Love Goes to Hawaii, but without the bitterness and with a great big helping of Hawaiian history and botany as a bonus. I loved it. It not only made me much more aware of the imperiled state of the native plants of Hawaii and what is being done to save them, it also validated for me some of the realizations that I've had about life along the way--that if we keep our eyes and hearts open and embrace what comes, we will discove... morer things about ourselves we never believed could be true. I would say its a must-read for anyone planning a trip to Kauai--or anyone who just loves Hawaiiana.
review 2: Lucinda did what we all would want to do-leave everything to live in a remote island in a beautiful home. Lucinda was the fundraiser for the National Tropical Botanical Garden. She does a great job of talking about the undercurrents of competition among the staff-and the ineptness of some and the skill of others. She was also very honest about the fighting/coupes among the board members. But her best prose was explaining of those hard-working employees who are working against all odds and very aggressive invasives to protect the native flora. less
