review 1: Dull, repetitive, and predictable. The characters were all full of themselves and selfish with little to no redeeming qualities. Marisol's rise to stardom was fraught with coincidence, and for all she claimed to "work really hard," she spent an awful lot of time running around and shopping and talking to her friends and going to non-gig parties. While not the worst book I've ever read, I only really kept reading to see if I was right about my predictions. Wouldn't recommend this.
review 2: I really wanted to like this book because I have so many students (I teach 8th grade English) looking for just this kind of heroine, Latina, trying to break into music, New York setting. Some things just felt all wrong. Marisol was nothing like what a New York Barrio teen wou... moreld be-I have 13 year olds more worldly than she is. Her naivete really got to me after a while. And everyone in the business and fashion community falling all over themselves to help her...please. This felt like a Bluford High or Border Town book to me. Some kids will eat it up, but there are much better books out there. less
