review 1: I liked this book and I think it would be encouraging to elementary school students meeting their classmates for the first time. The two main characters Penelope and Tiny are preparing for their first day of school. Penelope wants to wear her bright and sparkly outfit and pack a picnic and do all sorts of unusual things while Tiny is trying to convince her to just stick with familiar things. Tiny is always criticizing Penelope for her desire to to wear or take things to school out of the ordinary. In the end Penelope goes to school in her sparkly outfit with her picnic lunch and all of her classmates like her. I think the lesson is supposed to be that it's not a bad thing to be unique and different.
review 2: Getting ready for the first day of school is not ea... moresy for our character. She gets help from her best friend who is a year older than her and has gone to school. She wants to be who she is, but he tries to convince her that she needs to do what everybody else does. After all the advice she decides to be herself and is happy with her choice and accepted for her choice. Great message for kids about being yourself. less
