review 1: Why do people prefer boys or girls? What influences the decision of the to-be-parents? Why is there a great disparity in the decisions of the East and the West? Why does Asia have a huge gender ratio imbalance? So many questions which plagued my mind over several years have been answered by Mara Hvistendahl in this deeply thought-provoking and simple to read book. After reading MH's book, I, an Indian, am forever in awe of my parents as they escaped unscathed from Indira Gandhi's totalitarian regime during the seventies. This book is highly recommended for those of in all walks of life to know how the introduction of highly acidic policies of the Governments and the foreign funding agencies (mainly from the USA) have disrupted the whole demographics of Asia. This book will... more definitely change the readers' views about the USA and Asia once and for all.
review 2: This book was very interesting, but so incredibly depressing that I actually bumped it down to 3 stars from 4. I know that's probably unreasonable; I know that it's not the authors fault that women get the shaft six ways from Sunday, but it's her fault I'm now aware of it. The ridiculous preference for boys that leads to the abortion of female fetuses is disheartening enough (why not just modify the traditions that "only sons" can do?) But then rather than being treasured and honoured, the beleagured remaining females get reduced to chattel. I am so grateful that I was conceived in Canada and treasured as an only (and female) child. I hope all those families that aborted female fetuses have to pay through the nose to buy their "treasured" sons the wives that are so scarce. They deserve to suffer for their selfish choices. less
