review 1: While I love historical fiction, I am not the "typical" romance novel reader. I gravitated to this work after learning about it through VCU's Daily TelegRAM, an electronic bulletin for the university system. As Jefferson is a graduate of the University, her work was featured as newsworthy. I struggled to feel engaged with the story for the first few chapters, as history about the monarchs of France and England during the 17th century is not my strong suit. It is certainly an interesting look at the relationship between religion, politics and the monarchy and worth the time to read.

Also the typeface used for the quotations that begin each chapter is very difficult to read. But inside all of that is a really enchanting little story about love. less

A predictable historical novel about an impoverished noblewoman who ends up mistress to a king.
