review 1: This was exactly the book I needed after "the year of A Song of Ice and Fire." I wanted something that would be a quick, easy read, engaging, but intelligent and witty. But it's in the last leg where the writing really picks up, once our protagonists set sail for Antarctica on their search, and from thereon it's pure pleasure. I didn't mind Maria Semple's continual usage of American references much, even though sometimes they did get slightly exasperating. I just wish the first part of the book didn't read so much like one of her sitcom scripts. less
