review 1: There was a lot I liked about this book, particularly the honesty with which it was written. The author didn't sugar-coat her feelings toward her brother, or ignore her own shortcomings. As a child of the same familial structure I appreciated the insight into the brother/sister dynamic, especially some of her psychological references. But I felt like the historical references were irrelevant and distracting. To me it came across as a lot of name-dropping without any connection to the central story. Overall an enjoyable, but not earth-shattering read.
review 2: This book falls somewhere between a memoir and a non-fiction look at adult brother-sister relationships. The author takes a year off her job to help her brother in his fight with cancer. They aren't close
... more, so she tries to make up for lost time. Along the way, we learn their family history, which covers everything from Frida Kahlo to growing honeycrisp apples. A good read, but a little slow. It does jump around a lot, and has an understandably melancholy tone. less
