The Gift that Keeps on Givering

The following is in response to Lois Lowary’s book “The Giver.”

The Giver is one of those books that you probably read in high school that you didn’t think much about until the movie came out and even then you didn’t give it much thought after you got home from the theater. I went to school in southern Georgia is a small town and we did not get to read any of those token books that you read in high school like Catcher In The Rye, Brave New World, To Kill A Mockingbird, and yes The Giver—we read All Quiet on the Western Front (just ugh). I had to borrow 1984 from the library myself. They were dark, dark times.

Anyways, The Giver is a really good book about a society that is completely controlled, nay engineered by the government. The film adaptation followed the book close. The only differences that stood out to me were—spoiler alert!—the jobs of Asher and Fiona (friends of Jonas, the main character). In the film Asher becomes a pilot, but in the book he is a recreation leader. In the film Fiona becomes a nurturer, but in the book she works with the elderly. These changes in the film didn’t take anything away from the story so I didn’t mind them.
