review 1: So far my favorite book on the Essex County witch trials (they extended far beyond Salem). The author focuses on six women, both accused and accusers, and follows their experiences chronoligically throughout the witchcraft ordeal. The book is organized and easy to follow, and offers and in-depth look into the lives of the women and their families. It is very well researched as well. My son works in Salem historical theatre and has thoroughly educated himself in Salem history. He recommended this book to me and it was a worthwhile read.
review 2: I only made it through a fifth of this book before I stopped. I've read other books on the Salem Witch Trials, but this book makes you hate ever single person. They come as mean, petty, spiteful, and greedy. Even th
... moree people other books mention of having good character. Each chapter starts off with historical fiction of the people where the author wanted to infer their actions and thoughts. It then delves into what is historically recorded. However, this includes many examples of spectral evidence or rumors being presented as fact. She will also present many different options on a characters past, but then sum it up by stating their is no records of this person. For example, she talks at length of Tituba possibly being from South America, the Caribbean, or possible a Native American. She talks about her being married, but in the end states she doesn't know. Many times there are questions asked in the text along the lines of "who knows?" "what were they thinking?" "who really knows the truth?" and so on. There are times when the author goes off on small tangents about other family members and their past. She also dismisses some theories like the ergot poisoning and puts most of the emphasis on people seeing specters everywhere as if it was true. less

Rather difficult to get through. A bit dull to be honest!
