... moreival Guy Sajer's account of surviving the Russian Front in WW2 (The Forgotten Soldier) and found this book. I can't say it is what I was looking for; Sajer's book is both fantastic at describing the emotions felt during his tour of duty and also the fighting he went through. Sajer writes methodically like you would expect a soldier in the German army to do. The Sergeant in the Snow, on the other hand, is written in a very different style -- which makes sense. Stern and his men are Italian soldiers, and they talk like them and think like them. His writing style is more poetic, but it still drives home a general idea of how thoroughly tiring and futile everything must have felt. He endured the same things as all soldiers on that front: extreme cold, hunger, and exhaustion. He passes time dreaming of being back home and sipping on wine. He talks a lot of the men he leads -- the "Alpini" -- and his fondness for each of them, and of course their losses. His convoy is composed of Germans and he has a few anecdotes about them as well as the Russians he's attempting to flee. It's a different perspective and the fluidity of the book makes it an easy, quick read less
