review 1: Adored this funny novel about serious subjects, sex and racism; both loaded topics that this literary wizard handles magically. He's Southern so he's been compared to Harper Lee as many Southern writers are. Except this comparison fits. Maybe it's because he was actually born in Harper Lee's hometown or maybe it's because Mark Childress has a sixth sense about human nature...as does Ms. Lee. In any case, read him, especially if you love humor and don't know how to pull it off well in fiction. He'll show you how it's done. Doing it...well, that's another story.
review 2: Georgia is a childish, self-absorbed, materialistic, narcissistic, quasi-racist under achiever who feels worthy of everyone's respect/admiration because she keeps her mother and brother in lin
... moree and throws a ladies luncheon every September where she mingles with the wives of all the local men she sleeps with. I recognize that sometime's authors create a dislikeable protagonist, and Mark Childress, has done just that.I suppose it was an entertaining book. I found some of the scenes a little too detailed/graphic. The timeline of the book is also strange, the first hundred pages are a day by day, practically moment by moment, accounting of her life then 5 years passes in 8 pages.Ultimately, Georgia got what was coming to her. You can't be deceptive in every single aspect of your life and get away with it forever. Six Points, Alabama will never be the same after all the damage she created. less
