review 1: This is book two in the wonderful Sam Blackman series set in Asheville, NC. The descriptions of the area are travel guide worthy. I so want to stay at the Grove Park Inn and visit Pack Square, the City Bakery Cafe and Tupelo Honey Cafe. The plot is intricate and nuanced. I particulary loved the F. Scott Fitzgerald aspects. I highly recommend this one and look forward to reading The Sandburg Connection.
review 2: When I picked up this book at the library I did so because I was intrigued by the title. I loved the Great Gatsby in high school (although a lot of it escapes me now. I really should go back and read it again) and thought the tie in would be fun. Plus, from the synopsis, the book seemed to be a modern take on the old film noir detective movies.
... more I thought a good mystery with a bit of cheekiness might be fun. Unfortunately the "bad guy" is predictable and it wasn't as cheeky as I hoped it would be. There were a few nodes to the old style that if I wasn't looking for them probably would have passed by unnoticed. But, it was still fun. It could have picked up the pace a bit during exposition and slowed down the climax. I haven't read the book before and I still followed all the back story relatively well. I will keep an eye out for the next book, because I feel it has potential to be better. The characters feel like they are in mid develop and once they are fully fleshed out these books could be fun. less
