review 1: In the summer of 1991 Mark Greenside ,a writer, reluctantly agrees to rent a house for the summer in Brittany with his girlfriend Kathryn. By summer's end, he loses the girl but gains more than he can ever imagine. "I'll Never Be French" tells of Mark's trials of fitting in and getting by in a country whose language he barely speaks and whose culture is so vastly different than that of the US. If you love armchair travel books and are a lover of anything french this is a must read book. Written in a very humorous manner, I found myself laughing out loud and savoring each chapter like a delicious dessert. It's a book you don't want to put down and wish never had to end.
review 2: I've tried hard to think of a reason not to like this book. I've failed miserably.
... moreThis story of an American who goes to the northwest of France with his girlfriend is just an ideal introduction to life as an expatriate in rural France. I was particularly interested in the differences between how the French see Americans and how they see the British. The book was well-written, with lots of anecdotes, and the characterizations were believable and enjoyable. Brittany itself makes for a nice change from all the books written about Provence and the south of France. I strongly recommend this book to any Francophiles (like myself) out there. less

This book was hilarious. I'm happy it caught my eye as I was wandering the shelves of the library.
