Fright Fest 2017

I conquered Six Flag’s Fright Fest for the second year in a row!

For those of you who don’t know me too well – despite my unabashed love for all things Halloween, autumn, and ~*~2spoopy~*~ – I am a real fraidy-cat. In my family, long before I was born, each unit took on a different holiday. My parents’ was Halloween, so I grew up with Halloween traditions being an integral part of our family identity. To be unapologetically cheesy, orange and black runs in our veins.

But I was always so scared… and not always in a good way. I loved Halloween – I loved the thrill, the fun, the adrenaline, the atmosphere – but there was another part of me that was unpleasantly cautious. I couldn’t watch scary movies, I had to hide under my mom’s arm in the back aisle of Party City, and I certainly couldn’t stomach haunted houses.

Fast forward to young adulthood, and I’ve been slowly cultivating my tolerance for all things spooky! I’ve been peeking through my fingers during select scary movies rather than remaining totally blind throughout. I’ve been traipsing (almost) confidently into Spirit Halloween. I even spent some time keeping my brother company in the Netherworld parking lot while he waited in line (I only started screaming and running once I was sure I was clear of the monsters, but that’s a story for another day.)

Last year, my parents, one of my closest childhood friends, and I went to Fright Fest!

I had the time of my life.

It was like one giant haunted house; monsters roamed all over the walks, decorations & dry ice were abundant, and sounds of screams & chainsaws danced in the air. Terrified though I was, I went through nearly all the attractions (turns out I wouldn’t fare too poorly in a zombie apocalypse!) and actually, genuinely enjoyed myself.

Honestly, I could do a whole blog post just about Fright Fest 2016, but I’ll save that for later.

I went again this year with my parents and my boyfriend, and we had fun! Unfortunately, it wasn’t nearly as fleshed out as last year. In 2016, you couldn’t turn a corner without (rightly) fearing that a monster would be awaiting you just out of view. This go-around, we practically had to search for roaming monsters. The haunted houses were lacking, the decor was spread too thin, and it was very apparent that they were understaffed for their vision.

We had fun, but we all agreed that this time they seemed to try to do too much. Last year, most of the rides were closed, and priority was put on manning the houses and the park grounds. They even closed off half the park so that the population of monsters and patrons alike would be more concentrated. This year, nearly the whole park was open and so were the rides; it was clear that their man-power was not up to the task.

Opinion: I love riding the Six Flags rides, but if I want to do that I’ll go on another day! I came to get scared, and even I – Reluctant Fraidy-Cat of the Year – wasn’t scared but a couple times the other night. I miss when they went all-in!

Regardless, we had a good time. Some jump scares, some awesome decorations, and some cool themes lit up a fun, spooky night.
