review 1: I put this book on my library request list before the latest allegations appeared in the press by women who say Cosby drugged and then had some kind of sexual relations with them. The book is well done, and follows the civil rights movement during Cosby's lifetime. There are several typos and repeats that are annoying (such as imaging for imagining), but I like the way the author emphasized Cosby's successful impact on American comedians and culture along the way using TV as his biggest medium. The author also addresses Cosby's family tragedies, both those Cosby brought on himself and the horrific murder of his son. I think it would be a good book to discuss with blacks and whites together in order to increase understanding of racial divides and how to reduce ... morethem.
review 2: I've been a fan of Cosby's since his I Spy days and used to do his comedy routines in class, as did half the preteen boys of my era. He is a comedic giant, and it was reassuring to see a bio that didn't want to dwell too much on some of his less savory aspects but still managed to fill in some of his more subtle shadings. For instance, I never thought of Cosby as "angry," but in retrospect maybe he just managed to turn his anger into something fresh and, most important, funny and relatable. I was also glad to see Cosby's I Spy partner Robert Culp get his due. If Culp had played the TV star an shut the struggling comic down instead of helping him channel his genius into acting, there would not have been a Bill Cosby, at least not the one we came to know and love. less
