review 1: Did you know that Beatrix Potter almost single-handedly saved the Lakes District in England from being destroyed? She spent all her money buying property after property, then left it all to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now comprises the Lake District National Park. Not only was she a wonderful children's book author and illustrator, but she was also a natural scientist and a conservationist. Not bad for a woman who never left England. I love reading about great authors and where they get their inspiration. If you liked the Peter Rabbit stories, you'll love this book explaining where he came from.
review 2: There are those who simply adore Beatrix Potter, I am one who merely admires her life and work. For an ardent ad
... moremirer this book would be gold. I feel almost guilty giving it less than five stars because of the place she holds in literary circles. For the resources and information it gets five stars. The appendices in the back of the book are wonderful! There is a list of the plants Beatrix grew in her garden as well as another list of the plants she used in her books. There are source citations for the quotes from her letters and journals used in the book to tell the story of her gardening life. I love when quotes have source citations. I'm a bit of a nerd in that way. :)If you adore Beatrix and her books, you will adore this book. If you admire her, you will most likely enjoy the journey this book invites you to take. If you are interested only in those who adore bunnies, this book is not for you. I loved her admission toward the end of the book that she, in her later gardening life, came to think of animals and birds as pests: particularly rabbits and the birds who stripped her trees of their buds in spring. This book is well-researched and with sketches and paintings done by Beatrix included on almost every page, it is beautiful to hold and examine. less
