review 1: Le livre est un étalage de philosophie de comptoir. Le personnage de Virgile est juste inexistant dans 2 sens différents:1) Personne comme lui n'existe. Un personnage aussi idiot, sûr de lui, différent pour le plaisir n'existe pas. J'aime les héros timides mais ça c'est pas croyable. Et ça rend le personnage non réel mais en plus sacrément énervant.2) Le héros ne fait rien, ne veut pas s'engager et ça se ressent sur le roman qui ne va nulle part.Au long du livre on est assailli des reflexions tartes de Virgile sur l'amour et sur la critique de la publicité (non quand on est dans la publicité on ne doit pas trouver des points positifs au produit, ça c'est le département marketing, la pub doit trouver des idées pour mettre en évidence les avantages concurre... morentiels du produit). Il y a de la gentillerie partout, on critique la pollution, la société de consommation, MacDonald's etc. Les femmes sont des anges sur terres, les prostitués sont sympathiques.Le style est simple à part quelques éclats de vocabulaire que s'accorde l'auteur pour montrer que c'est un écrivain, un vrai.Vu que je n'ai vu avant la mienne aucune critique en français (goodreads n'est en même temps pas un site remplit de Français), je pense que ce livre est surtout fait pour les touristes, avoir de l'amour français à Paris que c'est dépaysant.Le livre est court mais ne dit rien, la fin est assez ridicule, le livre ne se mouille pas et reste dans sa niaiserie sentimentale.
review 2: Reason for Book Selection: I encountered an “unrevised, unpublished” proof of this book in the free section at my local library, and the premise caught my eye. Plot/Premise: Virgil’s girlfriend leaves an “I’m-leaving-you” message on his answering machine, which is fine with Virgil except that he has never met this woman and does not have a girlfriend!Characterization: Whether the cause stems from the fact that this book is “unrevised and unpublished” or from the fact that Virgil may be a bit of a flake, the protagonist is consistently inconsistent. He loves Paris; he hates Paris. He wants to die; he wants to live. Etc…Narration: The narration is heavy-handedly philosophic, and the narrator crowds the story with platitudes, ideas, and philosophies—some good, some bad. Description: The book contains interesting and insightful descriptions of the neighborhoods in Paris, its people, and food. Setting: Paris, FrancePrequel / Sequel / Etc: N/AIngenuity/Premise: The premise will get people to pick up the book, but many readers will put the book down when they discover that Virgil is getting nowhere fast. Language: The language is clean, but the author (as some European authors are wont to do) is candid about prostitution, sex, and other “facts of life”. Positives: The book is short and the premise good. Negatives: The book is written in the naturalistic style—more commentary on life and description than action. The “unrevised, unpublished” copy I had contained some rather glaring translation problems and some inconsistencies that were hopefully corrected in the final version. Some ends were left untied. The ends that were tied were not necessarily the ones one would want tied. Virgil, the protagonist, is a bit of a flake and a strange cookie, but that is probably why the author chose to create him. The biggest negative, however, is that the author is more concerned with waxing philosophical (especially near the end) than telling a story, so the sometimes contradictory theories, etc…get tedious. less
