review 1: This book is intense! Lots of information, at times it was information overload. My friend recommended this book and loaned it to me. I thought it was going to be more about Mt. Vesuvius erupting and the city's rebuilding and reaction, etc. Instead, it was 95% just about the life and times of Pompeii in general. The author had an incredible amount of enthusiasm for the subject matter. I shared most of that enthusiasm, however, there were times when the details became too much for me, but that's "on me." If this book looks interesting to you, definitely dive into it. The effort that must of gone into preparing and writing it is inspiring.
review 2: This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about Pompeii. Mary Beard does an excellent job of recreati
... moreng what life was like in the ancient city, so far as the facts will allow. She does not write speculation or conjecture as truth, but is very clear in calling things that have been considered reality for what they truly are, educated guesswork. This book presents a clear picture of the actuality of Pompeii and as closely as possible reconstructs how the city lived and died. It is an honest assessment of the ruins of the city destroyed by Vesuvius, embellished with photos and drawings of important items left behind. less
