review 1: I liked the idea of this book, but I was really only interested in the actual renovating of the house, having lived in sugarhouse. I was not interested in his families drama with grandpa, his rants about anything he didn't approve of, or his negative opinion of mormons and utah. So, I skimmed some chapters, skipped others, and read what interested me. All in all it could have been a great book, it was just too many ideas clumped into one. Many ideas didn't get developed enough - like where was his wife and what exactly was wrong with their marriage. The smell of the house, where did it go? So, the book is not as advertised. The ending was kind of warm and fuzzy, but it just wasn't my kind of book.
review 2: While some of the descriptions were charming,
... morethis book felt unfocused and strained. Batt lumped everything into the memoir that could marginally qualify as a life happening, as long as it was in rough chronological proximity to the purchase of his house. His exhaustive renovation was limited to a floor, a countertop, and a sagging staircase. I also wanted to tell him to stop whining about his grandparents...the attachment of their circumstances to his house purchase again seemed like he was gunny-sacking all life events to give his memoir some significance or weight. I agree with the other reviewer who said his wife seemed like a side note, and the jacket blurb about saving his marriage just a thin marketing ploy. less
