review 1: I loved this book even though I am still contemplating the ending and a bit unsure about what the protagonist, 17-year old Luke, is going to do next. I think I get it, but I am not 100% positive. It seems that his decision may run contradictory to the character that the author reveals in the course of the story and speaks to the change he experiences. Luke is so smart and sensitive...and coming from where he does, this wonderful young man is mostly believable. It's funny how when a novel is written for a young adult audience is has a distinct feel--different than one written for adults. Even though this is a coming-of-age story, it doesn't have a YA feel. I'll be thinking about that, as I continue to ponder this novel.
review 2: I didn't like it nearly as
... more much as The Cranes Dance, but the different subject matter could have had something to do with that. This felt more like a writing exercise than something with an actual plot, and the changes from first to third person were jarring. Also, it could have benefited from an ending, I felt like there were three or so chapters that could easily have been tacked on to the end. But I did enjoy it, somewhat. less

Good characters and the story didn't seem too forced. I liked the unexpected twists and turns.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book but thought the reveal at the end was a little too rushed.
