review 1: Stop reading reviews and read this book! When I started to read this book, my thoughts went like this: “definitely an american high school girl” and “Salinger’s style”. And a bad imitation of Salinger at that, because the beginning was a little awkward, with not so well connected phrases. But despite an unpolished writing in the beginning, the author turn around and began a slow change of pace and she realized an outstanding literary work… one of the best book I’ve read in the last years. This is funny, because good for me in the last years were Snow by Orhan Pamuk ,The Flood by J.M.G. Le Clezio, Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie… and to put this book among them can seem a little laughable…or more…Even in my wildest dreams I’ve never thought this... more kind of story can move me, but you have it…this book goes straight (no pun intended) next to J.D. Salinger’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ on my criteria. Yes, it has that kind of value…The literary merit is not in some fancy writing skill, the style is very simple and the book is easy to read. But this book has something to teach every one of us… ’Know thyself!’ says an ancient Greek aphorism…Reading this book you'll find out what is the meaning of love for you and what kind of person you really are! Are you a tolerant person? Are you a good parent? Are you a good friend? What are you ready to sacrifice in the name of love?…This book changed my entire view on this topics and I’m not proud about my findings…Time will tell me if I’m wrong, but I hope someday I’ll see this book on high school curriculum, teaching their students about dealing with gay kids and the importance of love in families and beyond.
review 2: The story was interesting, but it was clearly written by a Brit trying to do an American story. The language was all wrong. I had a hard time at first figuring out where the story was set, because it was such a weird mix of American and British references. I was floored when I realized, about half way through the book, that it was set in Texas. At best the setting was generic American. Nothing but a couple of city names said "Texas" at all.Beyond that, I had trouble connecting with Mike. He came off as completely without interests or goals of his own, and not very bright. Jason was more interesting, although the asshole act got pretty old after a while. Mike constantly walking around on eggshells with Jason, never having any confidence or security in their relationship, was pretty frustrating, too.I really wanted to like this, but I didn't. less

Not sure why this didn't appeal. The story was alright but I didn't really buy into the characters.
