review 1: First let me say that this does NOT feel like a Nicholas Sparks novel.(I am not a Sparks fan) The main character/narrator, Gerry Rubato, is drawn with some depth. He brings the reader along on his struggle to redefine himself as a father and to define himself as a widower. The relationships he has are interesting and somewhat complex. I was captivated right up until the ending which I found too trite. I felt like the author rushed to finish, tying everything up neatly, and utterly unrealistically. Still, it got me thinking of better endings so the story remained compelling even after I was done. I have not yet read the sequel story but I found this one definitely worth reading. One addendum, I was quite distracted by the grammatical and other editing errors in this book. Th... moreere were several blatant mistakes. Editors should take note that some readers (me) find that this significantly detracts from the overall reading experience.
review 2: Gerry Rubato's wife has died and his teenage daughter has run away from home, leaving him alone to raise an infant son. This is his story of getting through devastating personal losses, and coming away from them a better, more complete person, able to deal better with life, to appreciate it, to be honest with himself and others. High on emotion, sometimes brutal! This is very well written with characters whose pain you can feel. less
