review 1: A confession: I have read only half of this book. Its really enjoyably well written. In the beginning it was a delightful stroll through the Danish social landscape with the author. But by the time we'd waded over to Iceland that stroll had become an arduous repetitive trudge. Still a good read, highly recommended if you're planning travel to the Nordic countries and want to learn about the locals.
review 2: Wait, the Danish are the happiest people on earth? And the Finns have the best educational system in the world? What's up with these countries? A British reporter who resides in Denmark takes us on a fun and irreverent tour of the Scandinavian countries, looking at Norway's immense oil wealth, Iceland's economic crash, Denmark's immense social welfare syste
... morem, Finland's dry wit, and Sweden's export powerhouse. By the conclusion we have a much clearer idea of how these countries function as 'welfare states', rivals, cultural entities and to some degree, anomalies in the world economy. Booth notes that the Nordic societies are becoming surprisingly diverse and globalized, and that high levels of trust / cultural values of social harmony also play a big role. A fun read, for fans of travel writing, economics and amateur cultural anthropology. less
