review 1: Listened to the audiobook. For some reason I have a strange compulsion to read Chabon, even though I so often end up disappointed, or not even disappointed, just unmoved, uninterested. There are some very good essays in this collection (and some great lines) but as a whole, I found it uneven, and happily skipped a few of the essays after a few pages. I can't entirely figure out my frustration with Chabon, or why I keep reading him; there's a certain self consciousness, or smugness, or something... Great prose, but a puzzling writer (for me, anyway).
review 2: Hard to believe this was my first foray into the world of Chabon. This book is a collection of essays that helps form Chabon's intangible idea of Manhood. Some come from his actual life as a father, othe
... morers from his own childhood and some from general observations on the subject. I'll admit that I was mostly drawn into this book by the title. I am most certainly not a professional man so I'll start with amateurism. I won't go so far to say this is required reading for every 20-something guy before he crosses the threshold into manhood, but it was damn entertaining. It probably deserves a spot on your bookshelf just so you can refer back to it on your least manly days. less
