review 1: The problem with choosing a book with "THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING EVERRR!" stamped all across the front page is that your expectations are set extremely high and you imagine that you will roll around crying with laughter from page one. I think I smirked once of twice whilst reading this but it was not rip roaringly hilarious. It is a fairly amusing comedy of errors. But not all that believable. But maybe that's the point, maybe I just didn't get it. I did enjoy the descriptions of the foundation and the island.
review 2: A total farce! I bought this book to read on a long airplane journey and enjoyed it from start to finish, although I did find the final chaos a little too far beyond the suspension of disbelief. A fine array of disparate characters stumble thei
... morer way around the metaphorically rocky outcrops of a Greek island. There is a ring of much truth to the Fred Toppler Foundation but maybe not so much to the various high level dignitaries who are gathered for the annual bun fight. Nevertheless these things in no way spoil the enjoyment of this rapid succession of deadful coincidences, so cleverly contrived that they don't feel contrived at all. I doubt for a moment that Oliver could really have pulled off the deception for so long, yet Mr Frayn manages to persuade you that he could. If you have a long journey ahead, put this in your suitcase - and under no circumstances let ithe bag out of your sight! less
