If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch Review! *Spoiler Free!*

Goodreads Synopsis:

There are some things you can’t leave behind…

A broken-down camper hidden deep in a national forest is the only home fifteen year-old Carey can remember. The trees keep guard over her threadbare existence, with the one bright spot being Carey’s younger sister, Jenessa, who depends on Carey for her very survival. All they have is each other, as their mentally ill mother comes and goes with greater frequency. Until that one fateful day their mother disappears for good, and two strangers arrive. Suddenly, the girls are taken from the woods and thrust into a bright and perplexing new world of high school, clothes and boys.

Now, Carey must face the truth of why her mother abducted her ten years ago, while haunted by a past that won’t let her go… a dark past that hides many a secret, including the reason Jenessa hasn’t spoken a word in over a year. Carey knows she must keep her sister close, and her secrets even closer, or risk watching her new life come crashing down.

My Rating: 3 Stars

I read this book as an audiobook, and the performance of the book was really good. The book itself was what earned it the 3 star rating.

This book was heartwrenching and beautiful, but when I was over halfway through it, I thought back and realized that nothing had really happened yet. The synopsis mentions secrets, such as the reason why Jenessa never speaks, and I assumed that those secrets would be revealed throughout the book. However, you don’t get any answers about the girls’ true past until the last chapter of the book. I honestly would’ve stopped listening, but I’d spent too many hours listening to it to not get to the end and find out the answers that I wanted.

If you’re a patient person, this book could be really enjoyable. If I could give just that last chapter a rating, it would be 5 stars because it was written so well and it was so satisfying to finally hear the truth. But I don’t think I’d read this book again just because it took so long to hear about what really happened to these girls, and it became really frustrating for me.

The characters were all very well written, and they were what really made the story enjoyable for me. Carey and Jenessa’s relationship was so adorable and realistic; I just loved reading about how well Carey knew what Jenessa was trying to say even when she wasn’t speaking. I loved Carey, the main character, but my favorite character of the whole book would definitely be Jenessa. She was so cute and innocent and the way she was written was so well done that I just loved her and I felt like I knew her. Jenessa, overall, was honestly my favorite part of this book.

Let me know if you’ve read If You Find Me in the comments and tell me what you thought!

Happy reading!
