The Odd Squad
review 1: What makes this book so much fun? It's a mystery that can best be summed up in Memaw's cogent statement, "A mystery is like a pig wearin' underwear. Don't make no sense till you see him puttin' on pants." That's it in a nutshell, well, at least the nut part. "The Odd Squad" is a loony series aimed at, and aptly capturing, the same audience that is attracted to "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books, but its humor is both broader and more subtle, attracting a wider audience. As an adult I howled as I read the book. Three misfits unite in the school's lamest club--the Safety Patrol. This is not their idea, but the custodian is training them through not-so-successful activities and mystic stories that are probably lies but have some hidden moral which is not readily apparent. (Sha... moredes of "Mystery Men?") Can they face the bully who has made their middle school life miserable? What about that cute girl? This is a wild ride that will leave you laughing--hardly surprising from the man responsible for the "Over the Hedge" cartoon. Like the Wimpy Kid books it's told in the first person, with lots of hilarious black and white sketches that expand the concept beyond the written word. I really need to buy the whole series for my library.
review 2: The odd squad is about a group of kids who are bullied and forced together by the guidance counselor to form safety patrol. The three kids turn the tables and bully and a bully and learn that bullying people is not nice and is not right. They also learn that everyone has something they are going through and you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I think it also tries to teach the reader the difference between right and wrong. less
