review 1: A Shakespeare-quoting janitor, a safety patrol of one, and the ghost of Emily Dickinson ... what do all of these have in common? They're all a part of the mix at Emily Dickinson Middle School. Also included in the halls of Dickinson are: Nick I-am-short-enough-to-fit-in-any-locker Ramsey, the "Molly Green Giant" Molly Wibble and Karl Mooney, the lone member of the safety patrol, all constant bully targets. Their most constant tormentor is Roy, though they would never tell any adult that. After Nick's most recent locker stuffing, in which Mr. Dupree helps him escape, Nick heads to Dr. Daniels office (again) and is joined by Molly and Karl. Dr. Daniel's advice: “What I do know is bullies go after isolated kids - kids who are not part of a group. And you three are definitel... morey not part of a group.” So Dr. Daniels decides that the three of them should be members of the Safety Patrol, as in "there's safety in numbers." Mr. Dupree has other advice: "If bullies lose control, they get afraid. If they get afraid, they run away ... You bring the crazy." Nick has his own way of dealing with Roy: insulting texts sent to Roy using his grandmother's cell phone.Nick, Molly and Karl form a reluctant alliance, but their attempts at helping others fit in, don't go as planned. Mr. Dupree's thoughts: "Be smarter, not stronger. You want to control your opponent. And you can't do that without controlling yourself ... And the first step to controlling yourself is to know yourself. To know your strengths and your weaknesses." That sends them on a covert mission to try to figure out Roy's weaknesses. This time, Nick is so involved with his own deception he leaves the safety patrol in the lurch. Friendship is a delicate thing and Nick needs to understand that other people count, too. Otherwise ... well, is he as bad as Roy?Told in a fun format which includes text messages, cartoons, even logic trees, this should be a popular read with students.
review 2: I thought that this was the best of the 2 books in the series.I read the 2nd one in the series before the 1st one,and I felt like I was missing out.i got this book from the public library near where I live9thanks to my mom)and I wizzed through it.My mom was surprised that at the end of the day she asked me "how are you liking that book?" and I said "Oh it was great.I'm done by the way so you can take it back to the library.".And that is that! less
