review 1: Rating books is usually sufficient for me, but a review is in order for this book. This book is humbling & inspiring. A man that was viewed as one of the most brilliant minds in the 20th century - a pastor/professor, none the less - is imprisoned in Germany because of his involvement in a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler. I wondered how a pastor came to be involved in this? What justification could he have made because surely, he knew it was a sin. As I read the book, I became more intrigued by his Christian growth that lead him from pacifism to him understanding the difference between being "religious" and being a "Christian."
review 2: It is apparent that Bonhoeffer wrestled with some of the same questions we must all face. He struggled to understand his
... moreplace in a world that had gone mad, facing the dilemma of how to accept his government while at the same time working to overthrow it. He wanted people to accept that God was more than just a god that was there during the bad times, that God was bigger than that. He was a deeply religious man, while at the same time rejecting organized religion as it was known in Germany. He had witnessed that people could be Christians and yet could reject the very core of what Jesus taught. Bonhoeffer worked hard to get the churches in Germany to speak out against all the evil that was occurring in Germany and refused to accept Hitler's false Bible and doctrine. Bonhoeffer stood true to his faith and his brothers in Christ to the very end. Bonhoeffer is an inspiration. I encourage others to read this book! less
