review 1: I won this book on First Reads sponsored by Goodreads.com.I found it to be absorbing, based on the idea that one act can influence who you become (whether good or bad) because you may become obsessed with it and color everything from the perspective of the color of that event.Jewish school with one goy. A joke played at a birthday party. A grandfather who survived Auchwitz and never mentioned the fact he'd been there. Goy school with one Jew. Finding out privileged information and thinking it didn't apply to you, yet...drinking from age 14 because of it.It's a sort of "will I follow the pattern of those I came from?" or "will I defy that and become my own man?" Maybe a fight or flight response that you observe in yourself as if you are helpless to do other than what you ... moreare doing...until you have a son.
review 2: First of all Good reads have this book as Diary of the fall by david Laub and this is wrong.Diary of The Fall is by Michel Laub who is one of the best Brazilian writers of the new generation. The plot is a beauty inviting flowing prose. Michel Laub has a style of his own that seems to touch things without leaving a mark and without oppressing or disfiguring what is writen. The cover photograph tells it all a young boy falling. Diary Of The Fall is divided into chapters that our young boy narrator talks about. Some of the chapters are A Few Things He Never Knew About His Grandfather, A Few Things He Never Knew About His Father, A Few Things He Did Not Know About Himself . The young narrator tells us about Joao a thirteen-year-old is a Christian boy at a Jewish school. On the day of Joao's birthday he is given the bumps and the boys just let poor Joao fall from mid-air. Joao classmates have left him crippled needing physiotherapy sessions to strengthen his muscles. The young boy narrator is keen to find out more about his grandfather and looks through his grandfathers notebooks. His grandfather died when his father was only fourteen-years-old. Everyone from the young boys grandfather side died in Auschwitz. His father met his wife when he was nineteen at a dance at the Jewish club. Now his father is suffering from Alzheimer. As the young boy narrator grows into a man he is on his fourth marriage and he has never spoken to any of his wife's about Joao's fall. I loved the story from start to finish. I really liked how the story was set out into short chapters with sections in little paragraphs numbered .I highly recommend Diary Of The Fall by Michel Laub. The Diary Of The Fall is published 3RD April, 2014 by Harvill Secker. I hope that many other readers will take the opportunity to read Diary Of The Fall and enjoy it as much as I have. Apesar de tomar alguns caminhos que pareciam monótonos, o final compensa, e muito.

Excelente. Só não dou cinco estrelas pelo pudor da recência.

A moving meditation. Builds, raises questions, ends in hope.
