review 1: When Jane moves to Brookport, she's eager to soak up the flavors and experiences of her new home. She and Jack meet in adorable fashion near the soup truck where he works. The attraction is mutual, and they begin to spend time with each other as often as possible. Jane's a skateboarder and must deal with sexist attitudes at work and when she's on her board. Jack is not exactly filled with lofty ambitions and has had more than one unsuccessful relationship. When it turns out that Jack once dated one of her new roommates, another roomie suggests that she check out the opinions of the local Cute Girl Network, a group of women who spill all the dirt about their former lovers. Despite the negative information she hears about Jack, Jane is convinced that she is strong enough to ... moredeal with whatever comes her way, and that she likes Jack, flaws and all. After all, she has plenty of skeletons in her relationship closet too. I enjoyed this take on dating and trying to balance what one's friends think is the best thing and what one thinks is best. This graphic novel is a hilarious send-up on relationships and made me reconsider the many times I wished there was such as thing as a network where information about a potential love could be found. Not only is the story itself delightful, but the artwork contains all sorts of hidden treasures such as the message on the needlework being completed by Rose, one of Jack's roommates.
review 2: This was a fun graphic novel, and a great look at how gossip from other people has the potential to sink a relationship right at its inception. I liked the realistic portrayal of minimum wage jobs & just feeling aimless. Also cool was the examination of themes like sexism in skating (sk8r skating, no Michelle Kwon), and relationship dealbreakers. The illustration was great & the story sound.
