review 1: The best book I've read this year! Absolute delight to read, Mollie writes beautifully and with in touch of her real first thoughts and inner feelings from the past. It's also very interesting to hear about 1930s life from her own memories, I've learnt a fair bit from her. I love how throughout her career she never envied the people she worked for - the upper class. She was proud to be lower working class and believed it moulded her into a person she wanted to be, and she was happy being poor! Mollie is clearly someone to admire!
review 2: I absolutely adored this book and Mollie Moran. Like her, I grew up scrabbling over fields and tearing up Norfolk country lanes on my bicycle (but i never mastered tree climbing or had cause to meet the local PC!) and so the
... moreearly chapters brought a big smile to my face as did the rest of the book. I just loved her daring spirit and her determination to succeed. How lovely that she met Flo and they remained friends for all those years and that she kept in touch with George. What an era she lived in, she's certainly seen it all. Perhaps coming from domestic service didn't make it easy to accept being served when she had staff of her own, but I bet she was a great boss! I loved Mollie's easy writing style, she's a natural story teller and the Norfolk colloquialisms are brilliant! Sad to read of her death last month, what a lovely lady she would've been to know. less
