review 1: This book is a well-written first person narrative chronicling Molly Bloom's dealings in the high stakes poker world. It's an easy read that took me two sittings to finish (~ 3.5 hours). I've always liked poker, specifically Texas Hold 'Em, so, for me that was the draw of the book. I was rewarded with a fast-paced story of Molly's life starting with her move to LA from Colorado, trying to 'make it', to her taking over and running some of the highest stakes poker games in Los Angeles and New York City. I found the glimpse into the world of high stakes poker with celebrities, hedge fund Wall Street types, & Russian mob ties fascinating. Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Ben Affleck all make appearances in her high stakes games, with Tobey coming off as selfish and conniv... moreing. She faces many challenges to earning, starting and holding on to the world she helped create, and there is no shortage of drama surrounding the games, the gamblers, and danger that surrounds her. One can't help but want Molly to succeed as she faces challenges to hold on to her games in the face of competition, extortion, and finally legal trouble. The actual poker dialogue between players is minimal but entertaining. But, the real story is Molly working to save the empire she created and ultimately learn valuable life lessons. "Poker will break your heart," one gentlemen she recalls to her, which she doesn't understand until it truly has. I recommend the book to anyone who likes non-fiction biographical books, especially with an interest in poker and a rags to riches story.
review 2: I got this book after reading an excerpt in Vanity Fair and seeing that Toby Maguire is actually as annoying as I always shallowly and unreasonably assumed he was! I just had to read more. It was very entertaining and interesting, even beyond the parts involving Toby sucking(those WERE the best parts though- like he just was never qualified to be Spider-Man to me..and now it all comes full circle) less
