review 1: I liked the book. I know I will not last one train, so to me I was living vicariously through Monisha's experience. Plus she writes in good language without an attitude. She has a clever sense of humor and writes without any attitude.Only four stars because I am a visual person and I would have very much liked a map with squiggly lines running marking the trips she had taken. Also why not one single photograph was not included inspite of traveling with photographer is something that I wondered.....
review 2: This book made me want nothing more than to be sitting on a train in India, drinking chai and watching the scenery pass by! As someone who has traveled in India and loved it, I approached this book with excitement. The author is a British journalist of Indi
... morean descent. She and her traveling companion, whom she nicknames Passepartout, set out to explore India by taking eighty different trains all throughout the country. The point of their journey really is the trains, so the book had a lot of fascinating information about Indian Railways, its history, and the different kinds of trains and routes, along with many, many stories about the people and events that the author encounters while riding the rails. There is less information about the cities she visits and the sights she sees. The book felt disjointed at times, and the author’s up-and-down relationship with Passepartout was a little tiresome, but I really enjoyed reading about her adventures. Anyone who is passionate about trains or about India will enjoy this book! less
