review 1: I have 3 macaws, blue&gold, Scarlet and a green wing. I felt sympathy for Sarah as she only wanted to give back to this bird what it deserved, what had been taken from it. Good on her. None of mine have any behavioural problems or displaced aggression. The breeder of 50 years lets his macaws have free roam of 25 acres, never lost a bird. In fact they only prefer to go out when he does, returns when he does etc...It's sad to see ignoramus's miss the point of this educational book or claim that she shouldn't of had this bird. I mean you've all worked with a tortured Blue and Gold right, so you can judge? If I trapped you, cut your leg off, locked you in a little cage, abused you and forced you to breed only to write you off as damaged and leave you to rot further, then would ... moreyou all be happy? You make me sick people. I'm glad these birds are beyond the average persons ownership. Also, these birds don't smell(actually their oils smell like roast chicken, I love it!), their droppings don't smell, so if you're getting bad odours, you should wipe your upper lip or clean up your abode. PeriodThis book is a look, listen, learn and do not repeat after me. I wonder about the future of our own species let alone Macaws. Pull you're heads out of your self-satisfying smug rear ends. Switch on!
review 2: I just wasn't too impressed with this narrative, for which I had high hopes. The story is about Sarah, a blue and gold macaw who was caught in the wild (losing one leg to the snare), and is later rescued by Nancy (the author). Nancy lets the bird roam around her house, dive bombing her and the dogs, eating furniture, and making messes everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I love animals - but this just wouldn't fly in my household (No pun intended). And Nancy lets Sarah fly outside as well despite grave warnings from fellow bird owners. Of course, like most animal memoirs, this story ends in tragedy. I normaly like animal memoirs, but this just didn't work for me. Perhaps it is because I couldn't sympathize with this woman who let this bird take over her life. Or perhaps it was because I was perturbed by her repeatedly talking about how having Sarah (and a couple of other birds) had negatively affected her and her husband's sex life. In any event, I would only recommend it to readers specifically interested in bird ownership, and only if they want to be dissuaded from such desire. less
