review 1: At the end of World Was II a young woman arrives in Montreal from Europe to marry someone she has never met. She claims to be Lily Azerov but has really stolen someone else's identity. One day she disappears leaving her husband and her infant daughter. The abandoned daughter always wonders who her mother was and seeks the answers. A well written and fascinating story that switches between different times and the mother and daughter.
review 2: This is a moment when I really appreciate Goodreads. I liked this book, kept waiting to REALLY like it (as my husband did). But it never happened. Story is of great interest to me - a refugee from the Holocaust leaves Europe for Palestine and then Palestine for Canada. In order to get a Canadian visa she must be engage... mored to marry; upon arriving in Montreal her "fiancee" takes one look at rejects her (for reasons that are gradually clarified.) Nathan, brother of Sol, decides to marry Lily (who, we learn early on, isn't really Lily.) The characters and their lives are interesting - but the book really isn't. less
