review 1: I think the story behind this children's book in the brief Q&A with the author was more engaging than the book itself. The story isn't particularly strong--it's a basic children's story that seems formed around the photos the author took. How she took them is the fun part. Having grown bored with photographing squirrels on her backyard birdfeeder, she builds little sets, puts them on her porch, then hides peanuts among the props for the wild squirrels. She photographs them when they come, if the blue jays don't get the peanuts first. In one shot you can see that she uses Photoshop--in the background there's a bookshelf and the books in two parts of it are identical--which made me start to wonder how "real" these photos are. The props all look basic and homemade. I suppose ... morethat's somewhat part of the charm, but having seen the fascinating creativity of other artists in using everyday items in inventive ways to create a miniature scene, I was slightly disappointed by the simplicity here. For a picture book, there's not a lot of detail to discover on multiple readings. Still, I like squirrels and it's a cute concept.
review 2: Mr. Peanuts is an unusual squirrel. He does things like play the piano and iron laundry. Mr. Peanuts invites his cousin for a visit, and has to make sure everything is perfect for their time together.I can see this being a big hit with the students at my school for the pictures. The story is ok, but the live squirrels doing different things beside clever miniatures is sure to entertain the animal lovers. Wanna be photographers will want to read Nancy Rose's notes in the back about photography and how she created and captured the photographs for this book. less

The most fascinating part of this odd book is the instructions on how to photograph wildlife.
