review 1: I was really looking forward to reading The Dress Thief as it is set in Paris during the 1930's, a city that I have visited often and a period which I enjoy reading about. The story evolves around the fashion houses which also appealed to me as I haven't read any other books on this subject. Alex Gower is a strong and interesting character and the mystery of her past added another dimension to the storyline. However, I found the book quite slow to read and some of the language used did not fit in with the era in which the book was set, I felt that the language was too modern and at times out of place.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book and am shallow enough to say I was seduced to read it by the fab dress on the cover! It's an unusual story set post World W
... morear 1 in Paris about a young designer who has to use her talents to copy designs and of course, there's a love story in there too. I wasn't mad about the actual ending but it's very poignant as it concludes a couple of months before the start of WW2 - so you wonder what's in store for our heroine. I do recommend it. less
