review 1: A wonderful story of Boston in the years preceding and first years of the Revolutionary War. The chronicles of famous Bostonians, of key events leading up to the rebellion and of the battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill (1775 & 1776) are marvelously told. The only umbrage I had was the characterization (over the top) of Bostonian hero Joseph Warren and of George Washington (overly focused on his less dignified traits). Otherwise a very good read.
review 2: As a non-American, the words Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill, Breed's Hill, were familiar to me, but had no meaning. The author has brought them to life for me in vivid detail and has made me hungry for more. The thing that sets Americans apart from much of the world is that they have a very
... morepowerful mythology, and a unique ability to tell their story. One cannot help but admire them, if not always for their actions, then certainly for their ideals. less
