review 1: Really inspiring book. It reads easy because of the way it is composed, mixing interviews and letters. It reveals much of both his personal worries and the history of the anti-apartheid struggle without getting into the nitty gritty facts like names and years that make so many non-fiction book so tiresome to read. What I personally found interesting was comparing this struggle of the MK, an organization that was for using violence when necessary to further the cause, with other such organizations today. To think of the vast differences but also unmistakable similarities. In the end I think it is history that judges what is right or wrong, while most people (although of course not Mandela) are caught up in the many shades of grey in current reality.

... moreis is not the easiest book to read as its format is non-linear. However, if you have the patience to get through it and piece the puzzle together, it gives great insight into the real Nelson Mandela. (I do recommend taking a glimpse at the supplementary information at the back before delving into the main text unless you are very familiar with South Africa's history and geography. This will assist in putting everything into a better perspective.) For me, Mandela is an African King who has been prepared for a monumental task that transcended his homeland from the very day he was born. Every single experience in his life was preparation for the task that was before him. There was nothing accidental about his life. I believe that he understands that he was chosen by his ancestors long before he got here to be "The One" burdened with the herculean task of freeing a people and creating a new nation. When it finally clicks, it's about a man who has never forsaken the wisdom of his tradition and used that in combination with Western education and science to bring about change that will not only impact his native land but will also resonate throughout all of humanity. Here's to the virtue of patience and respect for the elders. Very few men and women will every walk into history while they remain mere mortals walking among us. This is usually achieved after drawing our last breath and exiting to the great beyond that history begins to pay attention. Mandela has challenged this with humility and we all should be happy to have shared this limited space called earth with such a man! A heroic character! less

Mandela is a hero for our generations. Well done. May he be surrounded by loving family.
