Henrietta’s War by Joyce Dennys is a wonderful collection of fictional letters written from an English woman named Henrietta to her friend Robert serving in the military during World War Two.
Dennys was an artist, writer, doctor’s wife, and mother. In many ways her stories reflect her personal life. Henrietta is married to a doctor and her letters and accompanying drawings to Robert are full of news from the home front. They are funny and designed to bring a bit of cheer and comfort to her friend fighting in France.
This short book was published in 1985. For the life of me I can’t remember what led me to it, but it made for appropriate reading on Memorial Day weekend. It is lighthearted and I enjoyed it immensely. I am grateful for all those who fought and continue to fight for freedom.
