review 1: I am not usually one to stir the pot, but I will start off this review by saying I really don't know why this book hasn't gotten a better rating so far! This is a lovely story about what it means to follow your heart and what happens when at first you don't. The depth of emotion was awesome, I felt for these boys, and I felt what they were going through. I loved this story, and it has made me a believer in this author! Don't miss this gem that somehow is flying under the radar! Way to go Nic, you have fans here always!
review 2: 2.5 My first thought when I finished this book was first, the last paragraph was super cute and second, I needed WAY more groveling and explanation to make work. This one wavered between a 2 and a 3 for me. It had some moments that I
... moreliked and it had some that I absolutely wanted to quit reading. Ben and Spencer have been best friends, along with several others, Dave, Mel and Suzie. Ben has an abusive father who expects Ben to do everything around the house (even though Ben doesn’t live there) and a mother Ben loves dearly who puts up with the abuse. We are told that Spencer has been in love with Ben for years but it doesn’t really come across. Suzie seems to take a complete turn, from a good friend in the group to a wicked bitch and then back to semi-decent. It was confusing. A positive is Spencer’s mother, who I liked and was kind and loved her son. She is a smart cookie, that one, especially when the “gonna do this because it’s best for you” is happening and she is right up there saying, shouldn’t Ben have a chance to say, a choice? Wise woman! There’s a misunderstanding that shouldn’t have happened (talk, boys) but Spencer going and hiding out for weeks, well, he lost my respect then. This isn’t a boyfriend acting badly, this is a best friend not even being decent. He purposely lets the calls go to voice (and go Aunt Jenny for calling him on that!), ignores texts, avoids his friend. That was an asshat move all around. So I felt he was a total coward and what happened to Ben hadn’t, would Spencer have just hid out and never talked to any of them again? I wanted to love this book, because I did like the premise. This is a new author with a debut story and I hope she continues to write. There is a lot of potential here and experience will only make it better. less
