review 1: This is a book that I will read again.I read it all in one sitting, but I should have taken some more time to catch my breath. The characters seem real and likable ,there are lots of historical references, which I like,it read like non-fiction,and a mystery and a love story all at the same time. There was no cynicism from the author, except when Eric questions his own work:placing copies of his early books in the fiction and science fiction shelves in bookstores. There is wonderful unselfish love, for Cary and Ralph;"Cary used to say that dogs were made by God so God could slow down and smell the grass."It was not an easy read but it was very worthwhile.
review 2: Ok. I couldn't really decide between two and three stars on this book. It's called The Book of Why, yet
... more the author never really resolves his issues with why. A self-help author who sees a shrink and takes meds sounds an awful lot like a fraud to me. I don't believe everything he says is true. We do not ask for everything we get (the premise of the book the Secret-- which I refuse to read). But, at the same time, our minds and our wills have a lot of power. I just am not sure where this book left me. His wife dies so he falls apart. But his issues go way back to his his father's death and the belief that he caused it. So, in order to deal with this death, he creates a set of rules to live his life. I think you can see by my rambling review, that there was no inherent concise conclusion -- other than he thinks his wife was reincarnated as a little girl in Lancaster. I don't think he resolves anything other than that he doesn't understand why bad things happen. It was a very interesting read, but left me cold and sad at the end. Hence the 2 stars. I wasn't wishing for a "and they lived happily ever after," but I was hoping for some sense of closure both about his dad and his wife. Not a book I will read again, but glad I read it once. This might make for a great book club read because I think there are many who would have differing opinions on it. less
