review 1: Even though FEN was first published in 2008, Nick Davies’s book remains a relevant and revealing account of the sad state of the (written) news media, most probably to this day. Whereas one would have thought the ‘fourth estate’ to be a noble and independent truth-seeking institution, the media appear to be nothing more than products for profit and propaganda. The glorious days of ‘all the president’s men’ (Woodward & Bernstein) are far gone: today journalists no longer go after the news but uncritically process what is pushed on their desks by the PR (public relations) of political parties, multinationals, pressure groups, news agencies etc. Or they fake news in order to sell. This bleak picture of the news business seems one-sided, yet the book is packed wit... moreh stories, facts and names taken from a reality that can’t be denied. Even the ‘erstwhile’ traditional ‘quality press’, like the Sunday Times or the Observer, seem to have fallen from grace. Nick Davies himself belongs to that dying breed of ‘investigative journalists’ and he clearly wanted to honour this title. As a result the reader is overwhelmed with well-researched information and evidence. To do justice to this painstaking amount of work, one should read the book more than once. But only after having taken a breather…
review 2: It seemed interesting when I picked it up in the library: an insider account on how the modern media are being corrupted by mass hysteria, propaganda and commercial objectives. Unfortunately "Flat Earth News" has become an endlessly long list of examples that are treated in the utmost detail. You quickly get the jest of it, but start to wonder if yet another example is really going to make the point even better. The book seems to favour quantity over quality where evidence is concerned. Therefore, leafing through "Flat Earth News" is a much more rewarding activity than actually reading it from cover to cover. less

Stop trying to make "Flat Earth News" happen. It's not going to happen.
