review 1: I am not usually one for courtroom dramas, especially British based ones, but "The Verdict" has gone a long way towards changing my mind. The plot centres around Terry Flynt, a legal clerk in his late thirties who is struggling to stay afloat in his career. When high profile businessman Vernon James goes on trial for murder, he hires Flynt's law firm to defend him, it seems like a great opportunity for Terry to get ahead. The only problem is that Vernon James was once Terry's best friend before he callously betrayed him and got him kicked out of Cambridge. Terry has never really moved on and now he finds himself put in the uncomfortable position of having to defend the man he hates most in the world. But is Vernon James guilty? And has the verdict already been predetermine... mored by forces that Terry has never encountered before? Full of twists and turns, "The Verdict" is one the most enjoyable books I have read all year. Highly recommended.
review 2: In a clever switch from the usual crime investigation format, the prologue reveals that the accused is innocent so the rest of the novel revolves around how he gets to be charged with what appears to be cut and dried case of murder, and a seemingly impossible defence case..Nick Stone's writing is a cut above the usual level for this genre and he gives a fascinating insight into the workings of the British judicial system. less
