review 1: It is hard to call this a memoir - it is, but it isn't. The author never really had a pet of his own. His childhood pets really belonged to his father, so the memories are not only of the begging for a dog and the stories of the dog, but more of remembering his father and the dogs, his interaction with his father with the dogs. I liked his father very much by the end. As an adult, the pets were his wife's, his daughter's - so the memories are of his children as much as of the cat and two dogs. Its a lovely book to listen to on a long drive - even the sad parts - and is likely a great book to read as well. Lovely language, good stories.
review 2: I would give this a 3 1/2 stars if I could, because I have very strict standards about rating. 5 stars is reserved fo
... morer War and Peace and Tolkien. 4 stars for Eddings and Brooks. I definitely enjoyed this book, because I practically read it in one sitting. Nick Trout is Vet trained at Cambridge, but settled in the US. This memoir is based on his family's dogs, and how they effected his life. I will read more of him. less
