review 1: I'm so glad to have read this book. My book club picked it and I'm not the biggest fan of memoirs or non fiction in general. It really has to draw me in. So when my book club picked this I was intrigued by the description but still hesitant. Then I thought... well, the whole reason I joined a book club was to expand my reading horizons. Man am I glad I did. I very much enjoyed hearing about Nicole's side of "ever eminent doom" of blindness to come. It's already a scary thought but I love how she took you through every aspect of life from the learning about her diagnosis to her career to motnerhood. Mostly, I loved her writing style!! She made it seem as though she was talking to family and goodness did she crack me up. I did feel sad for her because she couldn't feel like... more she could tell anyone. All I wanted was for her to be happy and free. She definitely is happy though so I'm glad for her. This made me want to meet her and talk with her and tell her that it's OK even though it's scary. I can't relate at all but I'm most certainly not someone who would judge just like her friend didn't. I hope she continues to be happy and have much love in her life.
review 2: I didn't necessarily hate this book. It was interesting enough and depressing, and it reminded me how lucky I am to have eyesight (with strong contacts). I had simply expected to read more about her "carpe diem" adventures rather than her experiences with childbirth (which was 90% of the book). I did not understand why she was so set on hiding her blindness and why she treated her boyfriend/husband so badly. I thought some of the book was funny, including the tips to hiding your blindness, but most of the time I was annoyed and cringing her behavior. less
