review 1: This was a fun little book with cute affairs, tasty men, good descriptions of food, restaurants, fashion and the odd decent sex scene but not quite as good as the first one which I liked so much that I bought. For a start, it suffers from the all too frequent problem of the ‘supernatural quirk’ that is being used so often these days. Like the sparkly vampires who do not drink blood, the sexy vampires who can go out in the sun ect ect and Harper has fallen into the same trap.In this, book two she has a succubus who does not once actually do anything succubus like. Not one person does she ‘deliver’ in this book. All she does is agonise over the two men she is in love, or not in love, or maybe in love, with. She eats huge amounts of ice cream with truly nauseating na... moremes (monkey chunky? Seriously? Americans buy food with names like that?), without gaining weight and that is her main supernatural attribute. There are a few continuity problems that are a bit glaring (to me) and the book hits a major flaw halfway in. Lily and co set up a demon to impersonate her so that she can be traced by Lily’s superior demon. Then for no apparent reason, in a mind bogglingly stupid sequence Lily appears to forget that that was the plan and go off half cocked on her own. She then does magic that she has never done before in an effort to accomplish a trace.... but wait we already know that the demon has a trace on her set by the others. That was the whole point of her being there. It was pretty woeful. This same demon is willing to undergo torture because she is ambitious and wants to get in with the higher echelons (ie Lily and friends) but despite this self interest she criticises their taste in cloths and behaves like a teen. Convincing? No.The worst part of the book is the ending. It might as well have had “to be continued” as the last sentence. Of the four or five story arcs utilised only one is resolved, the others just trail away into nothingness, with no reason given to why they are ignored. Annoying. Despite all this, the overall reading experience, for what it was, was enjoyable and I will even read the next one. When it gets to the library.
review 2: The story starts right where is left off in the first one, with no re-intro to the characters which seemed strange. I like the way the story is going with the exception if WHY the 3000 year old demon is so heart confused? I don't think my idea of the character fits with where Harper is going, which seems to clash with who the character is. I guess we will see. Lastly, I think the book jumps a few times- leaving me wondering if I skipped a paragraph, or even a whole page. Anyway, it's a different kind of heroine and so far I like it well enough to keep reading the series. less
