review 1: took a lil while to really catch on to it all, very different writing style then i have read before, but i was intrigued so i hung on n kept reading...interesting tale...i believe there was some umm...'fire' in the media shall we say about some of the 'goings on' in this book that wass written, but i didnt see anything wrong with it at all. It was just the writer's style, and quite frankly, it was just part of her story. I am excited to read more books that Nina Malkin may produce...
review 2: Swoon by Nina Malkin is not what I would consider a "must read" but should not be completely disregarded. I feel that Malkin must have been an elementary writer during the production of this book. She has an eloquent writing style,it was necessary for me to look up s
... moreeveral words throughout the book. However, when written by the point of view of a high-schooler, I feel that this level of vocabulary was out of place. Don't get me wrong, a teenager can speak eloquently. However, Dice uses the sentence "Sin was feeling revelatory as we ambled a path dividing fields and hardscrabble farms" to describe her walk through a field with Sinclair. Yet as she describes a boy in an earlier chapter, her tone much more casual "Who? Oh, Kurt Libo's friend, from the Williamses' party. Blond (What else), rainy-day eyes, sort of a baby face. Nice, though; not a moron." Malkin's writing switches throughout the plot, never keeping a consistent style. My last frustration with this story is the names of the characters. At first, I was a bit irritated by the fact that every student in swoon has a one syllable nickname. Then I realized that in a small setting such as swoon, this could work. I also took note that not everyone has a nickname. Most of the younger siblings of characters, such as Pen's Silas and Jordan. Also the well known virgin in the Swoon high school is known by her full name. This gives me the impression that a lack of a nickname indicates innocence. I would also like to point of Sin's full name, Sinclair Youngblood Powers. Although this name fits his pride and egotistic demeanor, it is unnecessarily unlikely. His name is unquestioned when he is new to the Swoon high school, making the story a bit more on the fantasy side when it doesn't need to be. I would like to compliment the author on locking in the reader's attention with unanswered questions. The only thing that kept me reading this book was the story of Ruby. Ruby appears as a spirit who often visits her psychic friend Dice and supplying her with comfort. The story of Ruby's death, however is not given to the reader until one of the last chapters. I nearly found myself in tears, as I read about her self-poisoning. Sin's outcome is also not supplied until the very last chapter. I was surprised, but pleased to find Sin was not put to rest by a ritual or magic. He simply vanished after he had given his revenge to Swoon and taught Dice to love herself. less
